A city of over 20 million people, Mumbai generates over 8,500 tons per day of municipal solid waste (MSW). The city's high population density, large slum areas and proximity to the coast pose a unique challenge to MSW management. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai showed leadership in addressing this challenge. IL&FS Environment's scientific closure of the Gorai dumping ground, the first of its kind in the country, was the first project to be completed as per the proposed Waste Management Plan.
